Several Manipur-based organisations in Delhi will hold a protest demonstration at Jantar Mantar today demanding the safe and dignified return of all internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their original homes in Manipur.
The protest is being organised jointly by the Delhi Meetei Co-Ordinating Committee (DMCC), Manipur Students Association Delhi (MSAD) and United Kakching Students (UKS). The demonstration will take place from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm.
According to the organisers, the main demand of the protest is for the Government of India to take urgent steps to ensure that all displaced people from Manipur—belonging to both Meetei and Kuki communities—are able to return home safely and with dignity. They said thousands of families have been living away from their homes for months due to the ongoing situation in the state and continue to face uncertainty, fear and hardship.
More than 20 internally displaced persons from Manipur are expected to attend the protest. Some of them will speak during the demonstration and share their personal experiences, difficulties and demands. The organisers said the voices of the displaced people need to be heard directly by the authorities and the wider public.
Several speakers are scheduled to address the gathering, including Dr Seram Rojesh, convenor of the DMCC; Dr Naorem Bobo, spokesperson of the DMCC; and Mr Hijam Rajen, advisor of the DMCC. Social and gender activist Mrs Elizabeth will also speak at the protest. IDPs from Manipur will take part in the programme and share their stories.
