The Assam Congress party staged a massive protest in Nagaon on Constitution Day, demanding the protection and preservation of the Indian Constitution. The demonstration saw the participation of party leaders and workers from across the district, including Assam Congress President and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi.
The protest, held in the heart of Nagaon town, drew hundreds of participants who raised slogans emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the Constitution. Congress leaders carried banners calling for the protection of democratic values and the rights of citizens. “We will protect this Constitution at any cost,” said MP Pradyut Bordoloi, addressing the crowd.
Earlier in the day, Gaurav Gogoi took to social media to underline the significance of Constitution Day. In his Facebook post, Gogoi said that India is home to many religions, philosophies, and schools of thought, but the Constitution is the text that unites the nation. He emphasized that when India became a Republic, the country chose the Constitution as the guiding document, shaping the nation’s identity and democratic values.
Gogoi warned that the values enshrined in the Preamble; justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity are increasingly being sidelined by those in power. He expressed concern over the weakening of institutions meant to protect individual rights and freedoms, noting that people who voice dissent or disagreement are often discouraged. “The Constitution lives only when we stand up for it,” he said, urging citizens to actively uphold its spirit and hold governments accountable, irrespective of the ruling party.
Speaking on the occasion, Gogoi stressed that Constitution Day should not be treated as a mere ceremonial event. He said it is a moment for reflection on citizens’ responsibilities, the role of institutions, and the need to protect the founding ideals of the Republic. He urged especially the younger generation to read the Constitution and understand its importance in public life and everyday governance.
