A family in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district was rescued by police after a large crowd attacked their house on Thursday night, accusing them of practising witchcraft. The incident happened around 9:30 pm in the Khliehshnong area of Sohra, where nearly 200 people gathered outside the home of Ham Shangpliang. The mob tried to harm the family and threatened to burn the house.
The trouble started after rumours spread that a young boy claimed he had “visions” and believed he was put under a spell by Shangpliang. There was no proof, but the rumour quickly created fear and anger in the area, leading people to surround the house.
Police said the situation became very dangerous as the crowd refused to leave even after warnings. Officers and local officials reached the spot but struggled to control the mob. Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said tear gas and stun grenades had to be used to safely rescue the family.
A total of 22 people, including children and visiting relatives, were taken out safely and shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital for check-ups and counselling. Extra police forces were called in to bring the situation under control.
Eight police personnel were injured while handling the crowd. A case has been registered, and nine people have been arrested so far. Police said more arrests will be made as the investigation continues.
