Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has expressed deep sorrow over the death of 24-year-old Tripura student Angel Chakma, who passed away in Dehradun after being injured in an alleged racist attack earlier this month.
In a statement, the Chief Minister said he was deeply saddened by the incident. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and said the tragedy once again shows the problems many people from the North East still face in different parts of the country. He added that discrimination and racial prejudice have no place in the Constitution and stressed that the rule of law must ensure justice.
Angel, who was pursuing an MBA at a private university in Dehradun, died after fighting for his life for 17 days. He had also secured a job recently, according to his family.
His father Tarun Chakma, a BSF jawan currently posted in Manipur, said that Angel was brutally attacked when he tried to defend his brother after they were subjected to racial slurs such as being called “Chinese”. He said his son told the attackers that he was also Indian, but the group allegedly used knives and blunt objects during the assault.
Tarun also said that the family initially struggled to get a police complaint registered, and an FIR was filed only after pressure from the All India Chakma Students Union and senior officers.
Police said that a complaint was received on December 10, following which a case was registered. Three accused persons and two minors were later arrested or detained in connection with the case.
