A major twist has allegedly emerged in the investigation into the death of MBA student late Angel Chakma, with the All India Chakma Students’ Union (AICSU) alleging that the prime accused has been wrongly described as a Nepal citizen, while he is allegedly an Indian national from Haridwar. The accused has allegedly been widely identified as Sumit Awasthi, and AICSU has alleged that some people are trying to create confusion by projecting him as Nepali.
Speaking to Northeast Scoop, AICSU President Drishya Muni Chakma allegedly said that this misinformation has allegedly created doubt around the investigation and may allegedly influence public perception. He alleged that the accused persons are influential and politically connected, which may allegedly explain why the main accused is still absconding.
AICSU has also alleged that Angel’s younger brother was threatened with death if the family dared to file a police complaint. The organisation has claimed that the threats were allegedly issued when Angel was still alive, and both brothers were allegedly warned that they would be killed if they approached the police. According to AICSU, these threats allegedly created fear in the family from the very beginning.
The organisation has further alleged that there were serious lapses in the police response. The incident allegedly took place on 9 December 2025, but the FIR was allegedly registered only on 12 December 2025, and even then, all legal sections were allegedly not applied at first. AICSU has also criticised statements by senior police officers, alleging that they downplayed the incident as a minor fight and allegedly ignored racial elements reported by the family.
Concerns have also been raised about the hospital where Angel was treated. AICSU has alleged that although the case was medico-legal, the police were allegedly not informed immediately. The organisation has demanded that this aspect be allegedly examined independently.
Another issue raised is the reward amount. AICSU has alleged that the initial reward of ₹25,000 for information on the absconding accused allegedly sent a weak signal. Although the reward was later increased to ₹1 lakh, the organisation said this allegedly showed that the case was initially not taken seriously. Meanwhile, political leader Pradyot Debarma allegedly announced a personal reward of ₹10 lakh, which AICSU welcomed.
Student organisations from the Northeast have also allegedly held protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding justice and better safety for Northeast students studying outside the region. AICSU has officially written to the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, demanding transfer of the case to the CBI and shifting the trial outside the state, preferably to Delhi, as the family allegedly fears continued pressure.
AICSU has also demanded action against police officials who allegedly refused to register the FIR initially and who allegedly misrepresented facts. The organisation has sought ₹2 crore compensation, application of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and creation of a dedicated police unit in Uttarakhand for Northeast residents.
Re-emphasising its allegation, AICSU said that the prime accused is allegedly not Nepali but from Haridwar, and has allegedly been identified as Sumit Awasthi. The organisation said alleged misinformation and delays have shaken the family’s trust in the investigation.
