The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has chargesheeted two more accused in connection with the 2024 Independence Day IED seizure case in Assam, taking the total number of accused in the case to five.
In a supplementary chargesheet filed before the NIA Special Court in Guwahati on Friday, the anti-terror agency named Bhargab Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi as accused. Both are residents of Dibrugarh district and have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Explosive Substances Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
According to the NIA, the two accused were arrested in June 2025, nearly a year after the agency took over the case from Assam Police. The case was handed over to the NIA in September 2024, while three other accused had already been chargesheeted earlier in June last year.
Investigators said Bhargab Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi were involved in arranging and providing funds for terror-related activities. The probe revealed that the duo had financially supported Jahnu Boruah, one of the previously chargesheeted accused. During investigation, Boruah reportedly confessed to planting four improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at different locations.
Assam Police had seized a total of 11 IEDs in August 2024, just days ahead of Independence Day celebrations. Officials said the explosive devices were allegedly planted as part of a protest and boycott call issued by ULFA (Independent) chief Paresh Baruah.
