‘Politics Nokariba Bandhu’: Assam unites in grief, tribute and justice movement for Zubeen Garg

What began as mourning has now become a public call for truth, as both the Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the state government intensify their efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding Zubeen’s death in Singapore on September 19.

A month has passed since the sudden demise of Assam’s most beloved singer, Zubeen Garg, yet the state continues to echo with his voice, his songs, and his spirit. From emotional tributes at Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur to candlelight vigils across towns, the people of Assam have turned their grief into a movement — one that seeks both remembrance and justice for their cultural icon.

What began as mourning has now become a public call for truth, as both the Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the state government intensify their efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding Zubeen’s death in Singapore on September 19.

The slogan now heard across Guwahati and social media — “Politics Nokariba Bandhu” (“Enough politics, friends”) — captures the public sentiment perfectly. People are no longer interested in blame or political noise; they want transparency, accountability, and justice for the man who defined Assamese music for a generation.

At the heart of this emotion lies a deep desire for answers. The post-mortem and viscera reports from Singapore are yet to be filed in court, leaving many questions unanswered. Meanwhile, the SIT, led by Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, continues its probe with renewed urgency. Over 50 people have been questioned so far, and officials have assured that the charge sheet will be filed within 90 days.

On Saturday, the BJP Assam Pradesh and the state government reaffirmed their commitment to a fair and transparent investigation. At a press briefing in Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, BJP spokesperson Kishor Kumar Bhattacharya stated that the case is being monitored directly by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“The government has launched a comprehensive probe, and we are following all legal and diplomatic processes since the incident occurred in a foreign country. Anyone found guilty will face the strictest legal action,” Bhattacharya said.

He also appealed to the public and political parties not to exploit Zubeen’s legacy for personal or political gain. “In a democratic nation like India, our judicial system is strong enough to deliver justice. What Assam needs now is patience and faith,” he added.
