Assam BJP leader and Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita today said that former Congress leader Prafulla Kumar Das resigned from the party due to what he described as increasing appeasement politics inside the Assam Congress unit. Margherita made this remark after a courtesy meeting with Das at the Brahmaputra Guest House in Guwahati.

According to Margherita, the meeting was not a political negotiation, but a simple visit by Das who recently left the Congress party. The Union Minister said that during the conversation he asked Das what prompted him to resign from the Congress after working there for a long time and handling several responsibilities.

“I asked my brother Prafulla why he suddenly resigned after giving so much to the Congress organisation,” Margherita said while explaining the details of his interaction with Das.

According to Margherita, Das responded by saying that the party had become heavily dependent on what he called “appeasement politics focused on the Miya community.” Margherita quoted Das as saying that any Assamese who respects his identity would find it difficult to continue in the party under these circumstances.

Das reportedly told the Union Minister that he was handling the social media department of the Congress in Assam, but felt uncomfortable with certain political directions that were coming from the party leadership. He also said that these directions had started influencing all communication material and campaign strategies.

Margherita further claimed that Das mentioned how the Congress leadership wanted a narrative to be created against eviction drives that have taken place in different parts of Assam. According to him, the former Congress leader said this was being done to build sympathy around specific communities rather than looking at the issue from the state’s interest.

The Union Minister stated that Das told him that the Congress leadership was instructing party workers to emotionally frame eviction operations as “anti-minority” campaigns. “When the party’s top leadership orders us to create a narrative and emotional atmosphere against eviction drives, what could be more dangerous than that?” Margherita quoted Das as saying during their discussion.
