Just three days after joining the Indian National Congress, former All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU) president Rejaul Karim Sarkar on January 14 resigned from the party, accusing senior Congress leaders Debabrata Saikia and Pradyut Bordoloi of acting as “BJP’s agents” and alleging that they had deliberately maligned his public image. Sarkar had joined the Congress on January 11, but submitted his resignation on January 14, citing serious moral and ideological differences.

In his resignation letter addressed to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Sarkar said that recent statements and public positions taken by Saikia and Bordoloi had caused him deep moral and ideological anguish. He stated that their actions had insulted not only him personally but also the larger cause of Assam and its minority communities, forcing him to take the “difficult but necessary” decision to leave the party with immediate effect.

Sarkar, who joined the Congress on January 11, said he had entered the party with the hope of strengthening a secular political platform committed to the interests of Assam and all its communities. However, he said that from the very day of his joining, his attempt to speak about “Bor Axom” and unity was twisted and misrepresented. He alleged that certain Congress leaders intentionally pushed him into political controversy, causing damage to his reputation built over years of public struggle.

In a strongly worded public statement, Sarkar said that no party or individual can ever be greater than the community. He said his political journey was guided by one clear aim — to protect the spine of the community and stand firm for the interest of the state without bending under pressure. He made it clear that becoming an MLA or holding any post was never his primary objective.

Taking direct aim at Debabrata Saikia, Sarkar alleged that leaders like him were acting as agents of the BJP inside the Congress and were slowly destroying the party from within. He said such leaders do not allow the youth to come forward and were deliberately blocking the path for the emergence of a strong and credible secular alternative government in Assam.

Sarkar also criticised Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi, accusing him of failing to recognise the leadership and contribution of minority organisations. He warned that the minority community would respond politically in the coming days. “If you do not recognise the leader of a minority organisation today, the minority people will introduce themselves through votes tomorrow,” he said.

Sarkar said he took the final decision after giving utmost importance to his conscience. He recalled that for the last 20 years, he had carried out his struggle without compromise, without bowing before anyone, and without surrendering his principles. Staying true to the same values, he said, he chose to walk out rather than adjust.

He announced that for now he would stay away from political discussions and urged people not to contact him regarding politics. Sarkar expressed confidence that the minority community and the “struggling family” he has worked with over the years would stand by him and take responsibility for the road ahead.
