The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has started taking a more active role in the selection of BJP candidates for the upcoming Assam assembly elections. According to sources, the Sangh is not fully happy with the way the BJP has been functioning in the state in recent months. This concern reportedly grew stronger after the results of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, where the party did not perform as expected.
To look into the matter closely, the RSS has formed a special team for Assam. The team includes Nripen Barman, Tirthankar Das Kalita, Sripadeepan, and Basishtha Buzarbaruah. These members have been asked to study the BJP’s candidate list carefully and give their suggestions. Sources say this team has also prepared its own separate list of possible candidates for each constituency, based on its assessment of the ground situation.
People familiar with the development say the RSS may advise the BJP not to give tickets to MLAs who have been involved in controversies. The Sangh wants the party to choose candidates with clean images who can connect well with voters. The RSS is expected to finalise its recommendations by December. Once the list is ready, it will be reviewed by senior central leaders Ullas Kulkarni and V. Bhagaya, who is also the northeast Prabhari.
The RSS seems to be treating the Assam election as an important one. It is working on a special strategy to make sure the party’s position remains strong in the state. The Sangh’s deeper involvement shows that the BJP leadership is looking at new ways to improve its performance and avoid mistakes from the past.
