Assam Congress president and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday supported Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s stand on fair elections in India. Gogoi said that Gandhi has been raising serious concerns about the voter list and the role of the Election Commission, and stressed that the issue is not about any one party but about democracy and the trust of the people of India.
Gaurav Gogoi’s remarks came at a time when political parties across the country are focusing on the functioning of democratic institutions. He said Rahul Gandhi is trying to ensure that elections in India remain free and fair, and that every vote counts. According to him, Gandhi has been pointing out large-scale mistakes and irregularities in voter lists, which he says amounts to fraud. Gogoi added that the people who are supposed to protect the integrity of elections must act responsibly and transparently.
Gogoi said, “Rahul Gandhi ji is fighting for a free and fair election in India. He has continued to show the scale of the fraud in the voter lists and the cover-up by those heading the Election Commission.” He said that the Congress party believes that election reforms are necessary, and that this concern is not just of one party but should be shared by all Indians who value democracy.
Gogoi also pointed out that the Election Commission is one of the most important bodies in the country. He said its job is to make sure elections are clean, transparent, and unbiased, but if doubts arise about its functioning, public trust can weaken. He reminded that Election Commissioners are appointed by the government, and therefore, the system must be transparent and accountable.
He said, “People who are appointed by the Prime Minister must work in a fair manner. When questions are raised about the voter list and when there is no clear answer, the public starts to lose trust.” Gogoi said that this is not a small issue and must not be ignored. According to him, any problem related to elections is a problem related to the future of the country.
The Congress leader further said that there should be a nationwide movement to push for reforms in the Election Commission. He said that people across states, across parties, and from all sections of society should come together to demand transparency and fairness in the system. Gogoi called it a matter that affects every citizen, because elections decide the leadership and policies of the nation.
“This has to be a clarion call by all people,” he said, adding that only public pressure can bring change. He explained that the country has seen many movements in the past that began with simple demands for fairness, and eventually resulted in historic reforms. Gogoi expressed confidence that people of India value their democratic rights and will support such a movement if they understand the importance of this issue.
He also said that Opposition parties are not asking for any special treatment, but only demanding that the rules be followed and the system remain clean. According to Gogoi, transparency is the backbone of democracy, and if the public loses faith in the voting process, the foundation of the nation becomes weaker. He urged people to look beyond party politics and focus on the bigger picture, which is the future of democratic functioning in India.
