The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the social media platform ‘X’ over an AI-generated video that allegedly promotes communal tension in the state.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta heard the matter and directed both parties to respond to the petition. The plea has demanded the immediate removal of the video, warning that its circulation could lead to unrest and disturb communal harmony in Assam.

The video, which has been widely circulated since September 15, reportedly depicts members of the Muslim community taking over prominent state landmarks, including tea estates, Guwahati airport, Rang Ghar, and government properties. Advocate Nizam Pasha, representing the petitioner, told the court that the video was posted as part of the upcoming elections and portrayed that if a certain political party did not come to power, the state would be “taken over” by Muslims. The visuals included people wearing skullcaps and beards, according to the petition.

The plea, filed through advocate Lzafeer Ahmad, stated that the BJP-Assam, as the ruling party, has a constitutional duty to uphold secular values. “The video circulated by its official account openly targets, vilifies, and demonises Muslims. It sends a message that the worst fate a state can face is its takeover by a particular community, and seeks support on that basis,” the petition added.

It further highlighted that state authorities are prohibited from any form of discrimination based on religion, caste, gender, or language, and must maintain fairness and secularism. The petition also noted that private citizens are legally barred from spreading communal disharmony or hate speech.

According to the filing, the video had already received over 6,100 reposts, 19,000 likes, and 4.6 million views as of September 18. The petitioner urged the Supreme Court to order its immediate removal to prevent further communal tension and potential unrest.

The case is being filed under public interest litigation, seeking stricter action against hate speech and communal incitement nationwide. The court will now await responses from both BJP Assam and the social media platform ‘X’ before taking further steps.
