The Sivasagar district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) as a precautionary step to prevent any possible disturbance to public peace and law and order in the district.

The order was issued by Mridul Yadav, District Magistrate of Sivasagar, and came into immediate effect from January 16. It will remain in force for a period of 60 days unless withdrawn earlier.

According to the order, the district administration felt there was a likelihood of serious breach of public peace under the prevailing situation. To avoid any untoward incident, the prohibitory order has been enforced as an emergency measure.

Under the restrictions, the assembly of five or more persons without prior permission has been banned. The order also prohibits collection of donations, burning of effigies, road blockades, burning of inflammable materials, carrying of deadly weapons, and destruction of public property. Any activity that may cause disruption to public order has been strictly barred during this period.

The order further restricts the movement of unauthorised persons or organisations within a radius of 200 metres of protected monuments and heritage sites that fall under the Archaeological Survey of India and the Directorate of Archaeology of the Assam government within Sivasagar district.

For any programme or event seeking relaxation of the restrictions, prior permission must be obtained from the office of the District Magistrate. Officers-in-charge of all police stations have been directed to strictly enforce the order and take immediate action in case of violations.

The district administration has warned that violation of the prohibitory order will invite punishment under Section 223 of the BNSS. However, magistrates, security personnel, and authorised government officials on duty have been exempted from the purview of the order.

The administration has appealed to the public to cooperate and follow the restrictions in the interest of maintaining peace and normalcy in the district.
