In a major breakthrough, Silchar police have arrested Jayanta Prasad Das, the mastermind behind a two-decade-long fake medical degree scam that has left the public health system vulnerable. The arrest comes following the earlier apprehension of Pulok Malakar, a fake doctor who had obtained certificates from Das’s unrecognised institution, the National Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).
Investigations reveal that Das had been operating NIMS for more than twenty years, issuing fraudulent medical degrees, including M.D. (Alternative Medicine), without approval from the National Medical Council (NMC) or any legitimate authority. These fake degrees allowed unqualified individuals to pose as doctors, putting patients’ lives at risk.
Police said Das orchestrated a large-scale network of fake colleges and certificates, systematically deceiving people and generating significant personal profits. “The NIMS has no legal recognition under any act. The syndicate has severely undermined public trust in the medical system,” said an official from Silchar police.
The scam came to light after Pulok Malakar, who had been practicing medicine with fake credentials, was caught. Subsequent investigations traced the network back to Das, exposing decades of fraudulent activity affecting countless patients.
Jayanta Prasad Das has been taken into police custody and is currently in remand for further investigation. Authorities are examining the full extent of the scam and identifying all individuals who obtained degrees from NIMS illegally.
