The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police has filed a case against Raijor Dal chief and Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi. Police officials said on Thursday that Gogoi has been accused of misleading the public regarding a chargesheet submitted recently in connection with the alleged murder case of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

According to police sources, the case was filed at the Guwahati Crime Branch. The SIT alleges that Gogoi circulated comments related to the chargesheet and told the public that the chargesheet was incorrect. Officials said such remarks could create confusion among the public about the authenticity and contents of the document. The police believe that these comments may influence public opinion at a sensitive stage of the investigation.

The case has been registered as Crime Branch Police Station Case No. 13/2025. It has been filed under Sections 221, 236, 238, 240, and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. These sections relate to offences connected to obstruction of investigation and attempts to mislead or compromise legal processes.

Police officials confirmed that the First Information Report (FIR) was lodged by Senior Superintendent of Police Rosie Kalita. Kalita is the Chief Investigating Officer of the SIT and is attached to the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell. Officials said the FIR was registered after reviewing evidence and internal reports regarding the circulation of statements linked to the chargesheet.

Sources said the SIT has taken note of several allegations connected to the matter. Investigators are now examining whether there was any deliberate attempt to mislead the public or influence the ongoing legal process. Police said the investigation will look into the source of the circulated statements, the intent behind them, and whether any legal provisions were violated.
