The investigation into the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has taken another significant step, as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) handed over the second post-mortem report to his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, on Saturday, October 4. The report, prepared at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), was delivered to Garima at their residence in Kahilipara by SIT officer Moromi Das.
Earlier, the post-mortem report conducted in Singapore was also given to Garima on October 2. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had clarified that the decision to make the reports public rests entirely with her.
Zubeen Garg, a celebrated singer and cultural icon of Assam, died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore on September 19, while attending the 4th edition of the North East India Festival organised by Shyamkanu Mahanta and his company. Reports initially suggested he drowned during a swimming session, but recent developments have raised suspicions of foul play.
Following explosive allegations, police have arrested Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, along with Shyamkanu Mahanta and two band members, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta. Goswami, in a statement recorded under Section 175 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), alleged that Sharma and Mahanta poisoned Zubeen and deliberately staged his death as an accidental drowning on foreign soil to hide their actions.
The arrests were made on charges including criminal conspiracy, murder, and culpable homicide, as detailed by Dr. Rosie Kalita, Senior Superintendent of Police at Assam’s Special Vigilance Cell. The accused have been remanded to 14 days of police custody while the SIT continues its investigation.
