Sonapur becomes a sanctuary of music and prayer as thousands pay tribute to Zubeen Garg

What was once a silent resting place came alive as thousands of fans, devotees, and well-wishers gathered to mark his first monthly memorial.

A month after the untimely passing of Assam’s most loved singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, the quiet town of Sonapur turned into a place of music, prayer, and emotion on Sunday. What was once a silent resting place came alive as thousands of fans, devotees, and well-wishers gathered to mark his first monthly memorial.

The Zubeen Garg Memorial Grounds witnessed a rare and moving sight—200 flutists performing together, their gentle tunes filling the air with love and reverence. They played “Mayabini”, one of Zubeen’s most cherished songs, turning the space into what many described as “a musical temple.” The sound of the flutes merged with the rhythmic chanting of Harinam, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere that felt both emotional and divine.

Leading the ceremony was Garima Saikia Garg, Zubeen’s wife, accompanied by his sister Palmee Borthakur and close family members. They lit lamps, offered prayers, and joined the crowd in silent remembrance. Garima stood near the memorial, her eyes glistening with tears, as the music and chants surrounded the ground where her husband’s memories continue to live.

Many described the atmosphere as surreal. The air was calm but heavy with emotion. The setting sun cast a golden light on the memorial, where candles flickered and flowers were placed by hundreds of fans who had travelled from different corners of Assam to pay their respects. For a moment, Sonapur seemed transformed into what many called “a second Vaikunthpuri”—a sacred space filled with the sound of devotion and the energy of love.
