Thousands of people took to the streets of Sivasagar on Saturday in a massive show of strength, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for six ethnic communities. The protest, organised by the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU), turned the town into a sea of people as demonstrators marched in unison, sending a strong message to the state government.
The rally started early in the morning and quickly grew in size, with people from different parts of Upper Assam joining the march. Roads from Serakapar to Station Chariali were completely occupied as protesters formed a giant human chain, linking arms to show unity and determination. The crowd carried banners and placards, many of which demanded the state government grant ST status immediately. Loud slogans filled the air, creating an atmosphere of energy and resolve.
People of all ages, including students, elders, and local residents, joined the demonstration. Many walked for long distances to reach the rally points, showing their commitment to the cause. ATASU leaders addressed the crowd, warning the BJP-led government that the agitation would escalate if their demands were ignored. The leaders emphasised that the recognition of these six communities as Scheduled Tribes was a long-standing demand that needed urgent attention.
