The Assam Government has decided to appoint a Special Public Prosecutor and seek a dedicated court to handle the case related to the death of popular singer and actor Zubeen Garg. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on New Year’s Day.
The Chief Minister said that Zubeen Garg’s death was an irreparable loss for Assam. He described Zubeen as not only a well-known artist, but also a voice that connected deeply with the emotions and lives of the Assamese people. He said the state had lost an artist who contributed greatly to music, culture, and society.
To take the case forward, the Chief Minister said that a Special Public Prosecutor will be appointed on January 12. The prosecutor will be supported by a team of three to four experienced criminal lawyers. The government will also approach the Gauhati High Court to request the creation of a special court to handle the case. According to the Chief Minister, the aim is to ensure faster hearings, transparency, and smooth legal proceedings.
The Chief Minister also appreciated the work of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has already completed its investigation and filed the chargesheet. He said the government wants to make sure that every step in the case follows the law properly and carefully.
Sarma said the government remains fully committed to ensuring justice. He added that the late singer held a special place in the hearts of the people of Assam, and the state will continue to honour his legacy.
“Assam has lost a cultural legend. It is our responsibility to ensure that justice is delivered fairly, lawfully and without delay,” the Chief Minister said.
