Stop the decline: Gaurav Gogoi appeals PM Modi to fix Northeast university mess

Gogoi shared his concern in a social media post. He said these universities were once known for quality education, research, and strong academic culture.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has expressed worry over rising problems in some of the top universities in the Northeast. He said that respected institutions like Tezpur University, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), and Gauhati University are now often in the news for negative reasons instead of academic achievements.

Gogoi shared his concern in a social media post. He said these universities were once known for quality education, research, and strong academic culture. But now, issues related to the decisions and actions of Vice-Chancellors are creating dissatisfaction among teachers and students. According to him, these problems are hurting the performance and reputation of these universities, including their rankings at the national level.

The Congress MP said he had already written to the Prime Minister’s Office about the situation at Tezpur University. However, he made it clear that his worry is not limited to one institution. He said the entire higher education system in the Northeast needs attention and support from the central government. He also said he will raise this issue in Parliament and ask the government to ensure transparency, accountability, and independence in the functioning of universities.

Recently, a team from Tezpur University met Gogoi. The group included members of the Tezpur University Teachers’ Association and student representatives. They gave him documents explaining their concerns and requested his support to resolve the issues as soon as possible.

In his letter to the Prime Minister, Gogoi pointed out that Tezpur University holds special importance because it was established under the Assam Accord. He said the university has played a big role in promoting education and innovation in the Northeast, and therefore it is important to protect its legacy and ensure that it continues to grow in the right direction.

Gogoi said that students and teachers are the backbone of these institutions, and their voices must be heard. He urged the government to take these issues seriously so that the universities of the Northeast can continue to be centres of knowledge, progress, and development for the entire region.
