Tension spread across parts of Dima Hasao district in Assam on Monday night after a man was killed in a police firing incident in the remote Jinam Valley area. The incident took place around 9 pm near Chillei village, a hilly and sparsely populated area close to the border.
According to police officials, a patrol team was carrying out a routine operation when they spotted an unidentified person in a forested stretch. Police said the man allegedly opened fire on the patrol team without any warning. The team, caught by surprise, responded immediately in what they described as an act of self-defence. The man was killed on the spot during the exchange of fire.
Police sources said that the deceased is suspected to have links with a militant or insurgent group active in the region. However, officers also stressed that his identity has not yet been confirmed. They added that further verification is needed before any final statement can be made about his background or possible affiliations.
Soon after the incident, additional security forces were moved into the area. Police teams began a wide search operation through the neighbouring villages and forest routes to check if any other armed individuals were hiding nearby. Officials said these steps were taken as a precaution to prevent any further tension or security threats.
The incident quickly drew the attention of local residents, who began gathering near the site. Many villagers demanded a proper investigation into the firing. Some were seen raising slogans such as “We want justice” and “No Justice, No Rest,” asking the authorities to make all details public and ensure transparency in the probe. Residents said they were worried about safety in the region and wanted clarity on what exactly led to the firing.
