Protests have broken out in different parts of Tripura following the death of Angel Chakma, a student from the State who was allegedly assaulted in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and later died in hospital. The incident has sparked anger, grief, and concern over the safety of students from the Northeast studying in other parts of the country.
The case has drawn widespread attention after the Tripura Chakma Students Association appealed to the central government to intervene. The Association said there had been repeated incidents of violence and harassment against youth from the Northeast, and called for strong action to prevent such attacks.
The demand was raised at a press conference in Agartala, where the student leaders said Angel had been severely beaten in Dehradun and later succumbed to his injuries. They said this incident had shaken the confidence of many families who send their children outside the State for study and work.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha spoke with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami regarding the case. Dr. Saha said he had been assured that a full investigation would be carried out and justice would be delivered. He is also expected to visit Angel’s family near Agartala.
Police officials in Tripura and Uttarakhand are in touch regarding the investigation. According to reports, six people were wanted in connection with the murder, and five have already been arrested.
Student organisations in Tripura have expressed serious concern about the recurring problem of racial comments and physical attacks against people from the Northeast in other parts of India. They said many students already feel insecure when they move out for education, and incidents like this only deepen that fear.
The Chakma Students Association has urged both the State and Central governments to bring in strict legal measures against racial abuse, hate crimes and derogatory remarks targeting Northeast communities. The Association warned that such incidents could lead to serious social consequences if not addressed.
As part of their protest, the organisation announced that a candlelight march would be held in Agartala in memory of Angel Chakma. A memorandum will also be submitted to Chief Minister Dr. Saha seeking strong punishment for those involved and financial compensation for the bereaved family from both Tripura and Uttarakhand governments.
Meanwhile, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya condemned the killing and said his party would continue to support the fight for justice for Angel.
Large numbers of people gathered across Agartala to mourn the young student’s death. Many carried candles and placards, calling for an end to discrimination and violence. The final rites of Angel were performed in Agartala on Saturday.
