Assam Police on Monday detained Rantu Paniphukan, the Chief Secretary and senior leader of the Veer Lachit Sena, while he was addressing a press conference at Hotel Apollo Grand on GS Road in Guwahati. The incident created a tense atmosphere as the police entered the hall and stopped the briefing midway, surprising everyone present.
According to reports, the police detained Paniphukan along with three other members of the organisation. The sudden police action took place just as the group was speaking to the media about various issues related to their activities and recent allegations against them. Eyewitnesses said that the officers acted swiftly and escorted the detained individuals out of the venue without allowing them to continue the briefing.
Sources said that a total of five members of the Veer Lachit Sena were part of the press conference. Some of them had been named in complaints related to alleged money demands and threats in recent weeks. Police officials later confirmed that Paniphukan and three others were taken into custody for questioning in connection with ongoing investigations.
The Veer Lachit Sena, which claims to work for the rights and interests of Assamese people, has recently been in the news for controversial reasons. Several of its members have been accused of creating public disorder and engaging in activities that police say go beyond lawful protest. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier stated that the government was keeping a close watch on the outfit and that action would be taken if it was found to be involved in illegal activities.
