In a late-night operation, Dispur Police rescued a man abducted from outside Pratikshya Hospital in Borbari on Sunday night and arrested eight individuals allegedly linked to the incident. The suspects are believed to have connections with the Veer Lachit Sena, an organization under scrutiny for suspected extortion activities.
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 9:30 pm when Ershad Khan, a resident of Goalpara, reported that his friend Rahul Mishra had been forcibly taken away by a group of 10–15 men. The kidnappers allegedly demanded a ransom of ₹15–20 lakh for Mishra’s release.
Acting on the complaint, police teams tracked the suspects to Tribeni Path, where the victim was found confined inside two vehicles — one bearing registration number AS01 EM 0718 and the other AS23 Q 3566. Six kidnappers were arrested on the spot, while two others were later caught during extended operations.
During the search, police seized several incriminating items, including two baseball bats, a hockey stick, a knife, two pepper sprays, six mobile phones, and documents linked to Veer Lachit Sena. Among the items recovered were “financial assistance” forms allegedly signed by Bikash Asom, a receipt book used for money collection, two identity cards of Biraj Ballav Kalita, and the organization’s logo.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Biswajit Doley, Injamul Huque, Rohan Ali, Mohan Borah, Nitu Ahmed, Chinmay Dev, Riyaj Ahmed, and Biraj Ballav Kalita.
Police have registered a case under multiple sections, including kidnapping, extortion, criminal intimidation, and unlawful activities, and said further investigation is underway to trace others involved and probe possible links between the accused and Veer Lachit Sena’s operations.
