The law and order situation in West Karbi Anglong turned serious on Tuesday as fresh clashes broke out in the Kheroni area, leaving two people dead and dozens injured, including police personnel. Senior officials said the violence escalated despite repeated appeals for calm and dialogue.
Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh described the situation as alarming and said around 30 police personnel and one IPS officer were injured while trying to control the crowd.
Speaking to Northeast Scoop, Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh said that he suffered minor injuries during the mob attack while trying to control the situation.
The DGP said he personally went in front of the crowd to urge people not to take the law into their own hands. “Dialogue is the only way forward. Violence will not solve any problem,” he said. Singh added that local youths had assured the police a day earlier that they would maintain peace, but the situation worsened on Tuesday when police personnel were attacked again.
The DGP said some people used dangerous methods during the clashes, including bows and arrows, and a gas cylinder was detonated, increasing the risk to both civilians and security forces. He appealed to teachers, senior citizens, intellectuals and the media to guide young people and help prevent further violence.
Singh also raised concern over the role of social media, saying false claims and live streaming of violence had added fuel to the unrest. He said around 700 people gathered in Kheroni during the clashes, rejecting exaggerated claims circulating online. During his interaction with the media, a shop was set on fire nearby, underlining how volatile the situation had become.
Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep concern over the loss of lives. He said the government was closely monitoring the situation and would deploy additional forces to restore normalcy. Five companies of the CRPF have been sent to Kheroni, and a senior police officer has been transferred as part of administrative action.
The Chief Minister said the government is in touch with all stakeholders and will try to resolve the issue through dialogue. He also expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and assured support to those affected.
