After spending 14 days under the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta are set to be moved to judicial custody today. The exact jail where they will be lodged whether Baksa Jail, Guwahati Central Jail, or another facility has not yet been confirmed.
The duo appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court earlier today, completing routine medical examinations ahead of their transfer. Tight security has been deployed at both the CID office and the CJM court premises, reflecting heightened vigilance following previous unrest in Baksa.
The arrests of Goswami and Mahanta are part of the ongoing investigation into the mysterious death of popular singer Zubeen Garg. So far, authorities have taken seven individuals into custody in connection with the case. Among them, five including Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhart Sharma, Zubeen’s cousin Sandeepan Garg, and two of the singer’s personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya—are currently lodged in Baksa Jail.
Earlier incidents during the investigation had seen tensions flare when the first five accused were transferred to Baksa Jail. Angry fans of Zubeen Garg had clashed with authorities, hurling stones and sandals while demanding justice for the late singer. In response, the Assam Police have stepped up security measures to maintain law and order and prevent any disruption during today’s proceedings.
