Eighteen Rohingya nationals, including women and children, were detained in Kalain market area of Cachar district on Saturday as they attempted to cross back into Bangladesh. The group was apprehended by local residents who noticed their suspicious behavior and later handed them over to the police.
Sources said the detained individuals revealed that they had entered India illegally several years ago after fleeing a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh. They claimed to have been living in Hyderabad for a long time, working as laborers. However, in fear of a crackdown by the Government of India against illegal foreigners, they reportedly fled Hyderabad by train and reached Badarpur railway station. From there, they traveled to Kalain with the help of local brokers who assist illegal migrants in crossing borders.
The group admitted that they intended to return to Bangladesh through the India-Bangladesh border in Cachar with assistance from middlemen. Upon receiving information about the group, Kalain police promptly arrived at the site and took all 18 individuals into custody for further questioning and legal action.
