A senior Tipra Motha Party (TMP) legislator has alleged that as many as 37 bills passed by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are still pending with the state government and the governor’s office, with some of them awaiting approval for almost a decade. The party has now decided to approach the Supreme Court to seek legal directions for the clearance of these long-pending bills.

TMP MLA Ranjit Debbarma said on Sunday that the pending bills include several key provisions concerning the customary laws of different tribal communities and the transfer of land rights to the TTAADC. “As many as 37 bills passed by the TTAADC are pending with the state government since the time of the CPI(M) rule in the council. Some bills are eight to ten years old, but they are still awaiting the governor’s assent,” Debbarma told reporters.

The TTAADC, which covers nearly two-thirds of Tripura’s geographical area and represents the state’s tribal population, is currently governed by the Tipra Motha Party. The council plays a vital role in local governance and development within the tribal regions of Tripura. However, the party has repeatedly voiced concerns about the lack of administrative and legislative autonomy granted to the council, despite being part of the ruling coalition with the BJP-led state government.

Debbarma expressed disappointment over what he described as a prolonged and deliberate delay in granting the council’s approved bills the necessary clearance. “These bills deal with tribal customs, land reforms, and governance issues. We have followed every legal process, but they are still lying unattended. This is not only disrespectful to the council but also to the constitutional rights of the tribal people,” he said.

The legislator further revealed that the party leadership, led by TMP chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, will travel to New Delhi to meet senior advocates and explore the legal steps required to file a petition before the Supreme Court. “We have already decided to move the Supreme Court to seek its intervention. We want to know from the top court if the government or the governor is willing to give our people the rights they deserve,” Debbarma said.
