A huge protest rally was held in Dibrugarh today as thousands of tea garden workers and members of the Adivasi community took to the streets demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, land rights, and a fair wage hike. The protest was jointly organised by the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA), All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA), Assam Chah Janajati Mahasabha, along with 36 other allied organisations.
The rally turned the heart of Dibrugarh into a sea of people, as protestors holding placards and banners marched with strong slogans in support of their long-pending demands. The demonstrators had gathered from early morning at different locations — Murlidhar Jalan Bus Terminus, Mancotta Playground, and Barpathar Playground — before converging at Chowkidinghee Chariali, where the main protest was held.
Leaders from ACMS, ATTSA, and AASAA addressed the gathering, accusing both the state and central governments of ignoring the voices of the tea tribe and Adivasi communities. They said that despite repeated assurances over the years, the demand for granting ST status remains unfulfilled, leaving the community deprived of constitutional benefits.
