Assam government suspends mobile internet in Baksa amid law and order concerns

In an official notification issued today, Ajay Tewari, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home and Political Department, said the internet and mobile data services of all providers in Baksa district would be suspended immediately and will remain so until further orders.

The Assam government has ordered a temporary suspension of mobile internet services across Baksa district following a serious law and order situation during the transfer of undertrial prisoners from police custody to the district jail. The move comes as authorities expressed concerns over potential public unrest and the possibility of inflammatory content being circulated on social media.

In an official notification issued today, Ajay Tewari, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home and Political Department, said the internet and mobile data services of all providers in Baksa district would be suspended immediately and will remain so until further orders. The notification clarified that voice calls and broadband services over fixed-line telephones will continue to function normally.

The government noted that the decision was taken to ensure public peace and prevent any escalation of tension in the district. Authorities warned that any violation of the suspension could attract penalties under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with relevant provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.
