In a major anti-narcotics operation, authorities in Meghalaya destroyed around 10 tonnes of illegally grown cannabis plants spread across five hectares in East Khasi Hills district, officials said on Tuesday. The operation highlights the state’s ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal drug cultivation and trafficking.
The joint operation was carried out by the district police in collaboration with the forest department, excise authorities, and the anti-narcotics task force at Laitlulong village in the Sohiong area. Officials said that the operation involved multiple agencies working together to remove and destroy the cannabis plants systematically.
According to police sources, the multi-department team carefully uprooted cannabis from the entire five-hectare area, which belonged to several households. The authorities emphasized that the plantation was illegal and posed serious risks to public health and safety. “This operation is part of our continuous effort to prevent the cultivation and sale of illegal drugs in the state,” a senior police officer said.
