The untimely death of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore on September 19 has left fans and the music fraternity in deep shock. In an emotional post on Facebook, his sister, Dr. Palmee Borthakur, urged the public to stay focused on uncovering the truth behind his death. “Focus! People, Focus! Let’s not stop until the truth is revealed and justice is done! We want Truth and Justice for our own ZUBEEN GARG! It’s our Right!” she wrote, sparking widespread reactions across social media and news platforms.
Earlier, on September 23, Palmee Borthakur performed the ‘mukhagni’ ritual, which is the lighting of the funeral pyre, as Assam prepared to bid farewell to its beloved music icon, Zubeen Garg. She was assisted by four ritual helpers — Dhritimala Deka, Jayanta Baruah, Lalit Nath, and Hiranya Das. Along with Palmee, Arun Garg and Rahul Gautam Sarma also took part in giving the final farewell to the legendary singer. The funeral procession began from the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex at Sarusajai, following all the necessary procedures at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
The post-mortem examination of Zubeen Garg started early in the morning on September 23 at GMCH. A team of four expert doctors from GMCH, Pragjyotishpur Medical College, and AIIMS conducted the procedure. The process was closely supervised by senior officials from the state and district administration, Assam Police, and the Health Department to ensure everything was done properly.
