Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh on Thursday visited Kokrajhar to review the security situation following a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) blast that damaged a section of the railway track between Kokrajhar and Salakati stations late Tuesday night. The explosion, which took place around midnight, caused panic among passengers and led to major disruption of train services across the region.
During his visit, DGP Singh chaired a high-level meeting with senior police officers and security officials at the 7th Battalion police camp in Charaikhola. The meeting was focused on assessing the current law and order situation and implementing preventive steps to avoid any similar incidents in the future. Officials from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), and other central agencies also attended the review.
DGP Harmeet Singh instructed the police and security forces to intensify surveillance along railway tracks and other sensitive areas. He also directed the district police to remain on high alert and increase patrolling, especially in areas considered vulnerable to subversive activities. “We are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of railway infrastructure and public life. Forensic teams have already collected samples from the blast site, and the investigation is progressing in full swing. We will soon identify those responsible for this incident,” he told reporters after the meeting.
The DGP assured that strict action would be taken against those involved in the explosion. He said the police were examining all possible angles, including any links to militant outfits that have been active in the region in the past. Security agencies have not ruled out the involvement of extremist elements trying to disturb peace and stability in lower Assam.
Following the blast, security forces have been deployed in large numbers in and around Kokrajhar. Additional police personnel have been stationed along the railway line, and vehicle checking has been intensified in nearby areas. The Assam Police have also stepped up coordination with the Railway Police and central security forces to maintain constant vigilance.
The blast site, located about five kilometres east of Kokrajhar railway station, suffered visible damage to the track and nearby railway sleepers. Railway engineers and workers have been engaged in repair work since early morning, but train services remain partially suspended. Several passenger and goods trains were either cancelled or diverted through alternative routes to ensure safety.
