Uma Chetry, a young wicketkeeper-batter from Golaghat district, made her One Day International (ODI) debut for India on Saturday, October 26, during the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 match against Bangladesh at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.

The 23-year-old cricketer became the first woman from Assam and the entire Northeast to play an ODI for India, marking a new milestone in the region’s cricketing history.

Uma received her maiden ODI cap from India’s vice-captain Smriti Mandhana in a brief team huddle before the start of play. The match was delayed due to rain, but that did little to dampen the emotions of the young player, who was visibly moved as she received the cap.

She replaced Richa Ghosh, who was rested after suffering a minor finger injury in India’s previous match against New Zealand.
