Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Wednesday visited the Shantirbazar Market in Dhalai district to personally assess the damage caused by the violence during the state-wide bandh on October 23. The visit came amid concerns over the safety of traders and residents affected by the unrest.
Speaking to the media after the visit, Dr. Saha emphasized the need for unity among communities in the state. “People do not want unrest in Tripura. Both Jaati and Janajati communities wish to stay together,” he said. The Chief Minister described the incident at Shantirbazar as a “conspiracy” and noted that similar unrest had previously occurred at Gandatwisa and other areas. He added that the government had acted promptly during the incident, monitoring the situation through the night and deploying police to maintain order.
Dr. Saha said that seven people had been arrested in connection with the violence and that the law would take its course. “I have met those who were injured in the hospital, and all possible help has been extended through the government helpline. Many people have requested the establishment of police stations and outposts. I will discuss this with the DGP and other officials,” he added.
The Chief Minister also met with district officials, ministers, and a delegation that submitted a detailed report on the incident. Shops and houses were vandalized, and some people were attacked during the unrest. Dr. Saha directed the District Magistrate to ensure prompt rehabilitation of those who suffered losses.
Announcing a relief package for the victims, the government will provide Rs 3 lakh for fully damaged houses and shops, Rs 1.5 lakh for severely damaged properties, and Rs 15,000 for partially damaged properties. Additional financial and medical assistance will be provided to individuals injured in the violence.
