Himanta Biswa Sarma fires salvo at opposition, revives 1983 violence report and defends BJP as ‘Assam’s shield’

If you have problem with Ashok Singhal… beat him, there is no objection: CM Sarma If you have problem with Ashok Singhal… beat him, there is no objection: CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today in a cabinet briefing, said that if anyone has issues with Ashok Singhal, they should address it directly, and there is no objection. He said that unrelated individuals should not be brought into any controversy, mentioning that public figures like Zubeen Garg should be left in peace and not involved. Sarma cited that lands near Zubeen Shetra belong to Ashok Singhal and should not be a point of dispute, and also said that similar issues involving others, like Jayanta Malla Baruah, have already been resolved.

In the same briefing, Sarma criticised former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta for failing to distribute the Tiwari Commission report after tabling it in the Assembly in 1987. “The report was tabled, but printed copies were never given to MPs or MLAs, and the Assembly library doesn’t even have one,” he said. The Chief Minister announced that the current government will circulate the report to all MLAs and place copies in the Assembly library on November 25.

Recalling the context of the commission, Sarma noted that Assam had witnessed severe violence in 1983, with more than 2,000 people killed and nearly three lakh living in relief camps. He explained that the Tiwari report covers the Nellie massacre and outlines the factors that led to the incident, including tensions among different communities. “The key points of the report are not about one incident alone but the demographic changes in Assam since 1951,” he said.

Sarma also issued a warning regarding political stability in Assam. He claimed that certain areas, including Hatigaon, could face threats if the BJP loses power in the state. “All must be confident of one thing the day BJP ceases to be in power, Assam will face risks to its indigenous communities,” he said, describing the party as a protective barrier for locals.

The Chief Minister further criticised opposition leaders, including Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Akhil Gogoi, and Gaurav Gogoi, accusing them of supporting changes that could undermine Assamese interests. He linked some criminal activities to these demographic changes, stressing the need for vigilance to maintain law and order.
