Purkayastha drops big hint: Political switch likely in two months Purkayastha drops big hint: Political switch likely in two months

North Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha has said that his next political move will become clear within two months. His statement has added fresh momentum to ongoing speculation that he may soon join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Speaking to reporters, Purkayastha described the moment as “a big step” and said that many leaders in the Barak Valley were uncomfortable with the possibility of his switch. According to him, these leaders fear that his joining the BJP could change the political balance in the region and affect their own positions.

“There isn’t much time left — within the next two months everything will be clear. I will remain within the NDA. The Chief Minister will decide the rest,” he said. He also indicated that the final decision would be made public soon.

Purkayastha’s current political path has been shaped by months of tension with the Congress. Earlier this year, he and Mangaldoi MLA Basanta Das were suspended by the party after they extended open support to the BJP-led state government while still being Congress legislators. The suspension widened the rift between him and the Congress leadership.

After the action against him, Purkayastha launched strong criticism against the Congress high command. He accused the party of becoming “pro-Mughal” and “anti-Sanatan,” saying that he could no longer stay with a party that, in his view, ignored Sanatan values. His remarks came at a time when the Barak Valley was seeing protests over alleged incidents against Hindus and monks in Bangladesh, which seemed to add to his shifting ideological stance.

If Purkayastha finally joins the BJP, it could bring a notable change to the political climate in the Barak Valley. The region has long complained of neglect, and his presence may help the BJP strengthen its organisation there. The party has already been working to expand its influence in the valley in recent years.

He also pointed out that in the recent expansion of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s cabinet, two of the four new ministers were from the Barak Valley. According to him, this shows the Chief Minister’s renewed attention to the region and adds to the idea that the valley could see more political focus in the coming months.
