Efforts to bring together the opposition parties in Assam are slowly becoming more organised, with plans for a joint front likely to take clearer shape in early January. Leaders from different political groups and sections of civil society are now openly talking about the need to work together ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

On Friday, the Congress held an important discussion with members of civil society at Panjabari in Guwahati. The meeting was attended by Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia and several well-known public figures, including Dr. Hiren Gohain, Paresh Malakar, Abdul Mannan, Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Bhuyan, and Shantanu Barthakur.

During the discussion, the participants spoke about the possibility of forming a stronger opposition space in the state. They also talked about ways in which different parties and groups could come together to challenge the ruling BJP. After the main meeting, further talks were also held with Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, as well as Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi. These conversations were aimed at understanding the views of all sections involved in the proposed alliance.

Assam Congress President and MP Gaurav Gogoi later said that the issue of building a united opposition might also be discussed at the national level during the upcoming Congress Working Committee meeting. Party sources suggested that most participants agreed on the need for an opposition alliance before the 2026 Assembly polls, although the final shape of the understanding is still being worked out.

While the opposition is exploring unity, the Assam BJP has already begun its own preparations for the elections. On Friday, the party started the first day of its two-day State Executive Meeting at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati. Senior leaders, MPs, MLAs, and office-bearers attended the event and reviewed the political climate in the state.

Party members discussed organisational matters and strategies for the upcoming polls. Key proposals included plans to strengthen Assam’s contribution to a secure and self-reliant India. The issues of migration, land rights, and tribal status demands from six communities were also discussed. BJP leaders said they wanted these matters resolved while ensuring that no community felt left out.

The meeting also stressed the need to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. Party leaders said they would continue to counter what they described as misleading statements made by the Congress on different issues.
