AJP Chief alleges close ties between CM’s family and Zubeen Garg case accused, demands swift justice

Gogoi said that several names associated with the case share close ties with the Chief Minister’s family.

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Monday launched a strong attack on the Assam government, alleging a close connection between Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family and individuals linked to the mysterious death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg. Speaking at a press conference, Gogoi raised serious doubts over the government’s handling of the investigation, questioning whether justice would ever be delivered in the case.

Gogoi said that several names associated with the case share close ties with the Chief Minister’s family. “There is now visible doubt in the fight for justice for Zubeen Garg. Those whose names have cropped up share close ties with the Chief Minister’s family. The CM’s statements have also changed, making everyone question whether justice will truly be served,” he said. He reminded that the CM had earlier publicly stated that Zubeen Garg was murdered and claimed to have received reports confirming it. “If the CM had such information, why hasn’t it been made public? The people have a right to know,” Gogoi demanded.

The AJP chief also criticized the secrecy surrounding the post-mortem report, urging the government to release it. He alleged that businessman Abhimanyu Talukdar, with strong political links, maintained a close relationship with the Chief Minister and was involved in multiple events linked to the Smile Asia Foundation, raising questions about political and financial connections.

Speaking about the slow pace of the investigation, Gogoi claimed that justice for Zubeen’s widow, Garima Garg, was being intentionally delayed. He questioned why accused individuals were being summoned slowly, why arrests had not been made promptly, and suggested attempts to malign others connected to the case.

Gogoi demanded strict accountability, including the removal of Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, brother of Shyamkanu Mahanta, from his post as Information Commissioner. He also raised concerns over the handling of Zubeen’s funeral ashes, which were not distributed as promised, and criticized the Chief Minister’s remarks about Diwali celebrations during the state’s mourning period.
