In the ongoing investigation into the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police is preparing to file its detailed chargesheet before the court at 11 am. This moment has been awaited for months, as the case has drawn widespread attention and concern across the state since September.

Officials said the chargesheet is voluminous, running to nearly 3,500 pages, and is the result of an extensive investigation that lasted almost three months. The SIT questioned more than 300 witnesses, including individuals connected to the North East India Festival in Singapore, hotel staff, organisers, and people who were in close contact with Zubeen during his visit.

Zubeen had travelled to Singapore to attend the North East India Festival and was staying at a hotel there. On September 19, 2025, he reportedly lost consciousness while swimming and later passed away. His death created a wave of shock and grief in Assam and led to calls for a detailed, transparent investigation into what really happened.

Seven individuals are currently in judicial custody in connection with the case. Among those named in the investigation are festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, singer Amritprabha Mahanta, musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, DSP Sandipan Garg, who is a cousin of the late singer, and two personal security officers, Paresh Baishya and Nandeshwar Bora.

The chargesheet that will be filed today is expected to outline the allegations against these individuals. The charges include criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, murder, and causing death by negligence. These charges were previously noted during the probe, but the detailed document being filed today is expected to present the full findings and evidence gathered by the SIT.

The Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier appealed to the public to trust the judicial process. He said the truth will come out when the chargesheet is placed before the court and examined through the proper legal steps. He also stated that justice will follow once the court begins its scrutiny.

However, political reactions have not been uniform. Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi raised concerns about the chargesheet even before its filing. He stated that the document does not seem to provide complete clarity on how the crime took place and does not name everyone who may have been involved. He said the chargesheet appears to raise questions instead of settling them, and this, according to him, does not fully deliver justice. His comments reflect the ongoing public demand for a clearer and more transparent picture of the events leading to Zubeen’s death.

After the passing of Zubeen, more than 60 FIRs were lodged across Assam. Many people sought a deeper investigation into the matter, and the case quickly became one of the most closely followed issues in the state. The initial inquiry by Singapore authorities reportedly found no direct signs of foul play. Later, Indian authorities conducted their own post-mortem and toxicology tests to understand the cause of death.

The Assam government also formed a judicial commission to look into the broader circumstances surrounding Zubeen’s time in Singapore, including organisational matters related to the festival and any possible lapses by those responsible for his safety.

Today’s filing of the chargesheet marks a key turning point. While it does not conclude the investigation, it moves the case into the next formal stage. Once the court receives the document at 11 am, it will begin the process of examining the evidence and deciding how the trial should proceed.
