The All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU) held a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Friday demanding the central government to take concrete steps toward granting recognition to six indigenous communities of Assam. The protest, led by Milan Buragohain and his team, drew students and supporters who said they felt the issue had been ignored for too long.
ATASU members said the main purpose of gathering in the national capital was to remind both the Assam government and the Union government that the matter has remained pending despite repeated discussions. They said the communities have been waiting for years for their rights and identity to be acknowledged in a proper legal manner.
Speakers at the protest pointed out that the Assam Cabinet had already submitted a report to the Legislative Assembly on the issue. They said that since the report is now with the government, Parliament should move ahead and pass the required legislation during the upcoming Winter Session. According to them, this is the right time for the Centre to take a clear stand and fulfil long-standing promises made to the people of the state.
ATASU leaders said they are prepared to wait until the Budget Session if needed, but they also warned that continued delay would leave them with no option but to raise the matter strongly during the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections. They said the communities cannot keep waiting without any progress and that they expect a clear roadmap from the government soon.
