The ongoing demand for justice for late singer Zubeen Garg has taken a political turn, with Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress President Mira Borthakur accusing the BJP-led state government of admitting its own failure in handling the case. Her remarks came after BJP State President Dilip Saikia announced a statewide Justice March to press for justice, which she described as a clear sign that the ruling party has lost control over the situation.
In a Facebook post, Mira Borthakur questioned the credibility of the state leadership, asking, “Who is running the government in Dispur?” She said that the BJP’s decision to take to the streets shows that even the party itself acknowledges the failure of the government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. “The BJP has been forced to go public on the issue, which means they admit that the government could not deliver justice for Zubeen Garg,” she stated.
Her comments came a day after Dilip Saikia, the BJP’s Assam President, addressed a gathering at Zubeen Garg’s cremation site in Sonapur, where he announced that the party would hold a statewide Justice March (Samdal) from October 22 to 27. The march will start from Nalbari on October 22, move to Mangaldoi on October 23, and later cover Dibrugarh and Cachar districts on October 24.
Saikia said that the BJP was committed to continuing the fight for justice for the late singer. “People are free to criticise, but as a party, we will pursue justice relentlessly. Politics can be debated, but no one should exploit Zubeen’s death for political gain. Zubeen himself never did politics, and neither should anyone use his death for political advantage,” Saikia said.
However, Mira Borthakur said that Saikia’s comments only prove that the government has failed to act decisively. “If the BJP’s own president has to take out a rally for justice, what does that say about their government? It shows that even they don’t believe the administration has done enough,” she said.
The Congress leader also alleged that the BJP was using public emotion for political mileage while avoiding responsibility for the delay in the investigation. She called on the government to be transparent about the progress of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is probing Zubeen Garg’s death.
