A large crowd gathered at Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur on Friday morning as people waited for the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to submit the chargesheet in the death case of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. For many, the moment felt heavy and emotional. Fans, supporters and local residents said they had been waiting for a long time for some clear answers. The chargesheet, which is expected to be submitted at 11 AM, marks almost 90 days since the singer’s mysterious death.
The atmosphere in Sonapur was quiet and tense as people stood together, hoping that the next steps in the investigation would finally bring clarity. Many said they were still struggling with the loss and were looking for a sense of closure.
Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia was present at the site and spoke strongly about the direction of the investigation. He reminded everyone that the Chief Minister had earlier said that all accused persons were already in jail. Saikia, however, said that only sending people to jail does not mean the case is truly solved.
Saikia repeated his earlier demand for a wider and deeper investigation. He pointed out that since the incident happened in Singapore, help from Interpol should have been taken from the beginning. He also said that a CBI inquiry would have given more confidence to the public.
He further questioned the role of members of the Singapore Association who were present during the event. According to Saikia, these organisers knew about Zubeen Garg’s strict conditions regarding water and fire, but they had not been properly questioned. He said it was difficult to accept that they had no responsibility in what happened.
Saikia also said that he had already submitted important documents to the one-member judicial commission that is handling a parallel probe. He added that he had always demanded judicial monitoring of the case to ensure transparency.
Saikia also raised questions about the organisers and sponsors connected with the programme Zubeen had attended before his death. He said the programme was linked to a department under Rajya Sabha MP Pabitra Margherita. Saikia argued that if the SIT does not question these people, the investigation cannot be considered complete.
He also warned that calling only a few individuals related to Zubeen Garg would not help in uncovering the full truth.
Speaking about the 3,500-page chargesheet prepared by the SIT, Saikia said that the size of a chargesheet does not prove the quality of an investigation. He said even a simple 10-page chargesheet could be enough if the inquiry is honest and thorough. According to him, the focus should be on identifying the guilty and ensuring that no one shielding them escapes responsibility.
He added that those involved in wrongdoing must face strict action, not just jail time, and that anyone protecting the guilty should also be punished.
