Fresh affidavit flags bias, seeks full transparency in Zubeen Garg inquiry Fresh affidavit flags bias, seeks full transparency in Zubeen Garg inquiry

A fresh twist has emerged in the ongoing inquiry into the death of Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg, as Advocate Reetam Singh, Spokesperson of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and General Secretary of the APCC Legal Cell, submitted a detailed affidavit before the One-Man Inquiry Commission led by Justice Soumitra Saikia. The affidavit, filed in his personal capacity, calls for an impartial and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the artist’s death in Singapore on 19 September 2025.

The affidavit, running 64 pages, lays out a series of concerns that, according to Singh, raise questions about potential bias and procedural lapses. He argues that unless these issues are addressed, the inquiry may struggle to maintain public confidence. The document highlights several alleged irregularities and urges the commission to examine the roles of individuals who, he claims, may have information or influence related to the case.

One of the core demands in the affidavit is a thorough investigation into the alleged involvement of Smt. Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, BJP leader Sidhanku Barua, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of State Pabitra Margherita, Tarsame Mittal, and others. Singh states that their names have come up in connection with complaints, business links, or associations that may require closer scrutiny.

Another major concern raised by Singh is the role of two senior legal officers of the state. The affidavit calls for the recusal of Director of Prosecution Makhan Phukan and Advocate General Devajit Saikia. Singh argues that their past handling of high-profile cases, which reportedly led to bail or acquittals in several scams, could compromise the fairness of the probe. He also points to documented conflicts of interest that he believes make their involvement inappropriate.

To ensure transparency, Singh has requested the appointment of independent Special Public Prosecutors and an Amicus Curiae from the Gauhati High Court Bar. According to him, such measures would help create a buffer between the investigation and any official or political pressure.

The affidavit further seeks the freezing of financial assets linked to business entities associated with the late singer. Singh suggests that financial records, especially those around the time of Zubeen Garg’s death, could offer crucial clues. He argues that a proper audit may reveal whether there were attempts at financial exploitation or a larger conspiracy.

After submitting the affidavit, Singh spoke to the media and spoke about the emotional connection the people of Assam shared with Zubeen Garg. “The people of Assam loved Zubeen Garg like family. They deserve the truth – the complete truth – without fear or favour,” he said. He added that when individuals in positions of influence are connected to the case, even if indirectly, the inquiry must avoid any appearance of partiality. Singh expressed hope that Justice Saikia would take appropriate steps based on the evidence submitted.
