The well-known Krishna Cinema Hall in Nagaon has been demolished. The building was pulled down this week after remaining closed for several months. The demolition has brought back many memories for people who grew up watching films in the hall.
The cinema hall was built in the 1980s. It was one of the most popular single-screen theatres in central Assam for many years. People came from many nearby places to watch Assamese and Hindi films. For a long time, the hall was also considered an important part of cultural life in Nagaon.
Older residents say that the hall was known for long running shows of Assamese films. Many remember the huge success of the Assamese movie “Bowari” which drew large crowds. The hall was also known for film premieres and special screenings. Singer and actor Zubeen Garg visited the hall during screenings of “Kanchanjangha” and “Mission China”. Many local people still talk about these events.
The cinema stopped operating earlier this year. The shutdown took place mainly because of financial difficulties faced after the COVID-19 pandemic. After the death of its founder, Kashi Bihani, the hall was managed by his son, Swapan Kumar Bihani. The family later sold the property to a socio-religious organisation.
