The Winter Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly began today amid intense discussions over the mysterious death of popular singer Zubeen Garg. Leader of the Opposition and Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia took the floor early in the session to raise a serious Adjournment Motion, highlighting what he called the government’s silence and negligence regarding the case.
Speaking in the House, Saikia stressed that the issue was not just political but deeply connected to the sentiments of the people of Assam. He questioned the government on several critical points, starting with the matter of security. “Zubeen Garg was more than a singer; he was an icon of Assam. Yet, why were adequate security arrangements not provided during his stay in Singapore?” he asked.
Saikia also pointed out delays and mismanagement in the repatriation of Garg’s mortal remains. According to him, the chaotic handling of the process caused unnecessary distress for the family and fans. He demanded accountability and a clear explanation from the state authorities.
Another key point raised was the context in which the tragedy occurred. Garg had been attending the “Northeast Festival” organized by India’s Ministry of External Affairs at the time of his death. Saikia urged that both the central and state governments bear responsibility in ensuring the safety and welfare of participants in such events.
