In the Assam Legislative Assembly, Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia today submitted a notice seeking adjournment of the House to discuss the death of popular singer and actor Zubeen Garg. The notice called for an all-party investigation and urged the government to recommend a posthumous Bharat Ratna for the late artist.

According to the notice addressed to the Secretary of the Assam Assembly, Saikia cited Rule 56 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business. He stated that despite Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma publicly labeling Zubeen Garg’s death as a “murder,” several questions and doubts remain about the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to investigate the case.

Saikia said that he had earlier sent a letter on 13 October 2025 to the Speaker of the Assam Assembly requesting the formation of an all-party committee to investigate the matter. “For unknown reasons, there has been no response from the Hon’ble Speaker,” he said.

The Congress leader also pointed out the involvement of Shyamkanu Mahanta, a key participant in the North East Festival held in Singapore with the Ministry of External Affairs of India. Letters from the Singapore High Commission regarding the matter have already been circulated in the media, yet no officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, the High Commission, or the Chief Minister’s office have been questioned by the SIT.

“Currently, the SIT appears to be acting as a spokesperson for the Chief Minister, providing information to the media that has created confusion among the public,” Saikia said. He added that many protests, media reports, and social media discussions indicate that the public has little confidence in the SIT’s impartiality. “It is widely believed that the SIT may have been formed to protect certain influential individuals,” he said.

The notice urged the Assembly to adjourn today’s proceedings and adopt a proposal to form an all-party committee to investigate the death of Zubeen Garg. “If the government is not trying to protect anyone or hide any information, there should be no objection in forming such a committee,” the notice added.

In addition to the investigation, Saikia called for a unanimous proposal to recommend that the Central Government award Zubeen Garg the Bharat Ratna posthumously. He also requested that a proposal be passed to observe Zubeen Garg’s birthday as “Assam Maitri Diwas” to honor the late singer’s contribution to art, culture and society.
