Mizoram has received national recognition for its remarkable efforts in traffic management. The state was honoured with a special award during the 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference held recently in Gurugram, Haryana. The award highlights Mizoram’s steady progress in creating safer and more organised roads across its hilly terrain.

According to an official statement, the award was presented to Lalmalsawma Pachuau, Secretary of the Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department, Government of Mizoram. The presentation was made by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal and Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu during the valedictory session of the event.

The UMI Conference is organised every year by the Institute of Urban Transport (India) under the guidance of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). It serves as an important national platform where states and cities share their experiences and showcase their innovations in improving urban mobility.

Officials said the recognition marks a proud moment for Mizoram, as the state has been working consistently to improve road discipline, expand traffic awareness, and introduce systematic traffic management in its capital city, Aizawl. Despite geographical challenges like narrow and winding roads, Mizoram has been able to bring order and efficiency to its traffic system through strict enforcement and public cooperation.

Over the past few years, the UD&PA Department and the Aizawl Traffic Police have introduced several measures to ease congestion in the city. Parking zones, traffic education drives, and time-based vehicle movement regulations have been implemented to ensure smooth traffic flow. These initiatives have not only reduced daily bottlenecks but also improved road safety and civic discipline.
