The Assam Legislative Assembly witnessed a tense and dramatic session today as Raijor Dal President and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi was suspended from the House for repeatedly defying the Speaker’s instructions.

The winter session, which saw several important issues on the agenda, was dominated today by the heated discussion around the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg. Gogoi, during his speech, raised serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death and criticized the state government for its handling of the matter.

Speaker Biswajit Daimary had repeatedly warned Gogoi not to speak on the issue, noting that the case is sub-judice and still under investigation. The Speaker reminded the House that debating ongoing investigations could interfere with legal processes. However, Gogoi continued speaking, pressing the government for answers and raising questions about various aspects of the case.

Gogoi alleged that Zubeen Garg was killed by Shyamkanu Mahanta. He pointed out that while Mahanta was arrested promptly, his wife has not faced any investigation. He also questioned the role of the External Affairs Ministry, referring to a Northeast festival held in Singapore and asking why Minister of State Pabitra Margherita, event organizers, and officials present, including the yacht captain involved, have not been called for investigation.

The MLA further highlighted procedural lapses during Garg’s visit to Singapore. He claimed that no government doctor or protocol officer accompanied the singer despite the event being government-organized. Gogoi described this as negligence on the part of the Assam government and said that Zubeen Garg was not given the care and security due to a state guest.

The situation escalated when Gogoi continued to speak despite repeated warnings. The Speaker, citing rules of conduct in the Assembly, finally suspended him from the House. The suspension led to murmurs and reactions from members across the House, reflecting the sensitivity and public interest in the issue.
