Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Thursday made a strong appeal for genuine unity among all opposition parties in Assam, saying that only a sincere and collective effort can put up a serious challenge to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Speaking at a press conference held at his residence, Gogoi said that the current political atmosphere in the state has been weakened by the “careless and confusing” comments of a few retired political leaders. He said these remarks do not help anyone and instead create unnecessary disturbances at a time when the opposition needs clarity and responsibility.
Gogoi said that the BJP has been able to strengthen its hold over the last decade because, according to him, the state government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has created hurdles instead of doing real work. He added that some former leaders have only added confusion at a time when the people want serious discussion on real issues.
He also accused the BJP of giving unnecessary attention to minor matters to divert the attention of the public. He said that all opposition parties must show responsibility, honesty, and discipline. According to him, decisions on alliances and strategies should be open and transparent, because hiding positions only weakens the larger effort.
Gogoi said that winning public trust is the most important task for the opposition. He stressed that people must feel confident that the opposition is working sincerely. Even when the opposition questions individual legislators, he said, the public should not doubt their intentions. Clear communication with voters, he said, is the only way to avoid misunderstandings.
Speaking about preparations for the 2026 elections, Gogoi said that the opposition will closely examine the voter list and the nomination process to prevent any irregularities. He also criticised the BJP government, saying that for the last 10 years the Chief Minister failed to fulfil several important responsibilities. He alleged that land and opportunities were given to certain companies in an arbitrary manner, while others were denied proper support. He reminded legislators that positions of power should not be used for political convenience.
Looking ahead to 2026, Gogoi said that there may be differences in politics, but unity and friendship must remain the central strategy. He said that voters do not want only criticism of the ruling party; they want clear and practical alternatives. “People want solutions, not slogans,” he said, adding that the opposition must show that it is prepared with real answers and not just verbal attacks.
